La hora de salida desde La Fortuna está programada para las 8: 00 a.m. cuando iniciaremos un recorrido que tardará aproximadamente una hora para llegar al pueblo de Venado. Las cavernas se formaron en el periodo del Mioceno, hace aproximadamente 15 o 20 millones de años, durante mucho tiempo estas estuvieron sumergidas en las profundidades oceánicas, sin embargo, debido al movimiento de placas tectónicas, las cavernas se elevaron hasta formar parte de la superficie. Las cavernas fueron descubiertas por lo aborígenes Guatuzos, la mayoría de ellas están constituidas por piedra caliza, estalactitas, estalagmitas y corales, también por caprichosas formaciones rocosas debidas a la acción erosiva del río subterráneo que las atraviesa. El recorrido tardará aproximadamente una hora treinta minutos, en este lapso encontraremos fósiles marinos, así como también, murciélagos, arañas y grillos. Como se va a caminar dentro del río y cae agua de la parte superior de las cavernas, se recomienda a los clientes llevar una muda de ropa, así como ropa cómoda y zapatos para caminar
